When Rain Gets Heavy | SERVPRO of North Oklahoma City

Do you love to sit and watch the rain? A steady and gentle rain falling in spring and summer is a welcome break from the bright sunshine, as the earth grows moist and the air is refreshed.
When rain gets heavy, though, it can start to overwhelm our roofs and gutters and leave our homes vulnerable to leaks. The ground can grow overly saturated, creating puddles that threaten the foundations of our houses. Heavy rain often comes with other threats, too, like strong winds, which can create other damage as the storm moves through the area.
SERVPRO of North Oklahoma City wants to keep our town safe. Not only are we here to start your recovery after a disaster around the clock, but we also want to help you learn all the ways you can be proactive in preventing damages.
Living in Oklahoma City comes with so many perks, and some pretty decent weather, too. We have the opportunity to truly experience every season, with cold winters and warm summers. Our location near the Rockies and the Gulf of Mexico may be beautiful, but it also means we can see some pretty strong thunderstorms and tornadoes, especially in spring and summer.
When rain gets heavy, we can see flash flooding that leaves roads covered with water and washes away anything in its path. Intense rain and thunderstorms can also leave your yard looking more like a swimming pool, creating potential basement flooding for your home.
We can’t always tell what Mother Nature is going to do, especially when it comes to rain-induced flooding, but we can take action to keep ourselves safe. Keep a close eye on local news stations when bad weather is predicted, and always have two different ways to receive weather alerts.
When it comes to flooding, the more prepared you are, the safer you can stay. Create an action plan with your family before a storm moves in, and make sure everyone knows how to communicate with one another before, during and after a storm.
If you are away from home when flooding is predicted, do your best to get home or to a safe, indoor location on high ground. At home, bring inside anything loose or secure furniture that can’t be brought inside. Move anything that can’t be replaced, like important papers, to the highest floor in your home.
If water starts flooding into your home while you are there, stay out of the water as much as possible. Shut off the electricity either to the floor that is flooding or your entire house. If the water is actively moving, get to the highest floor and don’t enter the water.
There is a good chance that water is moving much faster than you think. Call us as soon as you can, and stay in your safe location long after the threat has passed.
Even with the best planning, disasters still happen. While we are working through your recovery process, we can help you secure your home in order to prevent another disaster in the future. Start outside of your home in order to do everything possible to keep water out the next time rain gets heavy.
Consult a professional about your landscaping. Talk about how to add grading to your yard in order to keep water running away from your home. Ask about where you should add organic materials or flower beds in order to help with rain absorption and avoid puddles and ponding. Your yard is a great first line of defense when it comes to preventing flooding.
If you don’t already have one, or yours simply wasn’t big enough to keep up during the last storm, consider adding a sump pump. This works to move water away from the foundation of your home and can keep your basement from flooding when rain starts to overwhelm the ground around it.
Keep in mind that our SERVPRO® team is always right around the corner, ready to help you dry out as fast as possible any time disaster strikes. Our experts have the training and equipment to tackle water damage fast so you can get back to living.
